Cometic's MLS design exceeds the limitations set out by the OEM composite
gasket. By using a stainless steel design Cummins owners can hold more boost
allowing for a more powerful truck all while maintaining durability and
drivability. Also because we offer a wide range of thickness' we can help to
set up quench areas or set up tolerances. The MLS design also offers an
alternative to o-ringing or "wire locking" the cylinders. Testing has shown
very impressive results on boost levels exceeding 80psi on street driven
applications utilizing aftermarket 12mm studs.

Cometic Gasket Materials

MLS ( Multi Layer Steel) The
Cometic MLS gasket is comprised of 3 layers of Stainless Steel up to .051"
thickness, above .051" 4 or 5 layers are used.
Cometic uses Stainless Steel for increased strength, it's ability to rebound
and also corrosion resistance.
The outer layers of the gasket are embossed and coated on both sides with a
Flouroelastomer rubber based material ( Viton) designed to meet the demands
of a variety of harsh sealing environments, load conditions and surface
finishes. The Viton coating is heat resistant to 250C or 482F.
The centre or shim layer of the gasket is comprised of an uncoated Stainless
Steel layer which can be varied to accommodate multiple thickness
requirements. The MLS gasket is ideal for aluminium heads to cast blocks and
aluminium heads to aluminium blocks.
The composition of MLS will also withstand the shearing forces created by
aluminium heads on cast iron blocks. No re-torquing is necessary. By design
the MLS gasket promotes an even torque load across the sealing surface
allowing for measurable reduced bore distortion.

AFM ( Aluminium Foam Material) Ideal
gasket material for machined surfaces. AFM is a chemically blown compounded
nitrile synthetic rubber bonded to an aluminium core with temperature resistance
of over 250F.
AFM material has an 85% recovery while maintaining strong torque retention, does
not require gasket sealers or silicon bead, re-torquing is not required.

CFM 20 A perforated steel core with
an elastomer surface is ideal for head gaskets.
Available thickness: .043", .059"
Aramid Fibre This is a premium high
temperature, high density creep resistant material that requires no re-torquing
and is fuel resistant. All Cometic fibre materials are asbestos free and require
no additional sealants.

Armor Clad Ideal for exhaust gasket
applications. Can withstand temperatures up to 2000F. Compressible to seal less
than perfect surfaces, retains torque.

NOTE. MLS (Multi Layer Steel) exhaust gaskets also available. Maintains a
torque set, will withstand different combinations of cylinder head & exhaust
manifold materials and will not push out or burn through.
Phuzion


Cometic Gaskets Phuzion is the next stage in
head gasket development.
Phuzion is comprised of a Cometic MLS head gasket and multiple Garlock
Helicoflex gas filled O rings.
By combining the two technologies a superior
combustion seal is created without machining any grooves in the block or head.

| The gas filled
o-ring portion of Phuzion is manufactured from high strength aerospace
tubing capable of withstanding ultra high combustion temperatures and
pressures. Additionally each ring is plated with silver to increase the
sealing level and minimize brinelling. The silver also aids in withstanding
head to block movements without burnishing the surfaces. The real innovation
to the gas filled o-ring though, is the gas itself. During the manufacturing
process the gas in the ring is sealed in at 500-600 psi at room temperature.
As the engine is warmed up, the gas is heated increasing the pressure inside
the ring causing it to expand. This allows the ring to seal the combustion
even in the event of head liftoff. |
| The
MLS gasket portion of Phuzion is what gives you the ability to use the
gas filled o-rings without machining any grooves in your block and/or head.
MLS head gaskets are comprised of three layers. Viton coated embossed spring
steel outer layers and a steel inner layer, which provides support and
thickness to the gasket. Embossments on the MLS gasket allow for proper seal
around oil and water passages.
Phuzion Requirements: Head and Deck surfaces should
be within .002” of flatness and have a surface finish of 50RA or finer. The
compressed operating thickness of Phuzion is .051”. |
